Late last year, Microsoft officially unveiled its new look Xbox Live avatars. Fast forward to today, and they are finally ready for testing.
From today, June 19th at 12 noon PDT, Xbox Insiders on the Alpha ring will be able to access a beta version of the new Xbox Avatar Editor app. The beta version of the app will launch “with a selection of customizable appearance and closet items in each category,” with plans to introduce additional accessories, props, moods, clothing, and appearance categories in the “near future.”
Players will be able to customize their new avatar with a wide range of body types, gender-neutral clothing, and “entirely new categories of appearance items and accessories, including fingernails, makeup, limbs, nose rings, and moods.”
To help players’ avatars stand out from the crowd, each feature, including skin tone, hair, wearables, and props, can support over 16 million color options, offering almost eighty octillion (one followed by 27 zeroes) color combinations.
Finally, the new Photobooth feature in the Avatar Editor app lets players capture a photo of their new avatar to use as a Gamerpic. In the Photobooth, players have access to numerous emotes with frame-by-frame advancement, rotate and zoom controls, and a wide variety of background colors.
“Self-expression is an important tenant of Xbox Avatars, and we know that some of you have become attached to your Xbox Original Avatar since we first introduced them almost ten years ago,” Microsoft added. “We’re giving you the freedom to choose how you represent yourself to Friends on Xbox Live, whether that’s with the all-new Avatars, a custom Gamerpic, or your Xbox Original Avatar. We love the new Xbox Avatars, and we hope you do too.”
