The publisher revealed in a recent earnings call that they are, “laser-focused on raising the bar with this year’s new Call of Duty” and that the game is looking “fantastic.”
“This year we expect to further expand our presence with the launch of an all-new epic first-person shooter title under the Call of Duty brand. From what we’ve seen to date, the game already looks fantastic and will bring meaningful innovations to the franchise,” it added.
Of course no details about the title were offered.
EGM’s TAKE: First let’s address the “meaninginful innovations” part of this statement. What else could Activision possibly bring to the Call of Duty table? The biggest room for improvement has to be the game’s campaign; every year it’s the only part that gets slated, with many no longer bothering to play it. Maybe Treyarch could offer an incentive for playing the campaign, multiplayer XP bonuses or extra perks for completing it, similar to Battlefield 3‘s co-op missions. As far as multiplayer goes, we can’t think of much the team can do with the tried and tested methods is already in place. The most innovation will come from new game modes and perks, but we think the teams have learned how dangerous it can be to add new perks. Of course we love to be surprised, and if we knew how to make Call of Duty better, we’d be making games, not reviewing them.
