Civilization Online is in development at XL Games and will mark a departure from the series gameplay that fans have become accustomed to.
While the overall civilization warfare will still exist Civilization Online focuses on smaller more personal battles. Players within each civilization must co-operate to fend off the opposing three.
“That’s the core mechanic of the Civilization game — you conquer other civilizations by military or through technology,” executive producer Jake Song told Massively. “We are planning to support various types of combat, like small 1v1 PvP stuff in the corner of the world, but you can also gather hundreds of people and invade Washington or some other city.”
In another departure from the main series, events in Civilization Online will play out in real-time instead of the turn-based system used in all Civilization games.
There’s still no release window for the title at the moment.
