New Details on Twisted Metal’s Multiplayer Options

Posted on January 12, 2012 AT 03:32pm

THE BUZZ: Twisted Metal is coming on Valentine’s Day to break hearts (as well as bones), and some new details about the game have come out in the latest episode of QORE.

Multiplayer-focused MP1st compiled the information given as part of QORE’s coverage.

A variety of game types will be available, each of which pits players against one another in various situations. Some types of modes will be all about putting players in confined spaces where they must battle it out, while others will be set up more like races, with competitors being eliminated one by one until there is only one player left. As well, multiplayer matches will feature a high level of environmental damage, to the point where almost everything on maps will be destructible.

EGM’s TAKE: On Twitter, Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe had this to say about the game:

“To keep expectations in check, know this: the bosses are super cool, I think the stories/cutscenes/game fiction is really very cool, and the campaign is more varied than any other Twisted Metal we’ve ever made BUT if you go in expecting a campaign the likes of Batman – Arkham City, Skyrim, Gears of War, Killzone 3, etc… you will be sorely disappointed. Again, not knocking our campaign – it really is the biggest and most varied one we’ve ever done – but just want to set expectations and be super clear that the heart and soul of the title is all about the multiplayer.”

The point to Jaffe’s comments is that Twisted Metal really is a game all about the multiplayer—and in terms of that, I expect it to excel. I’m a big fan of multiplayer experiences, but so much of that genre at this point is first-person shooters. So, I’m always glad to see more games like Twisted Metal around.

Sure, it’s still a shooter at heart—but it comes at that idea from a different and fresher perspective.
