The game will partially be set in the city of Pittsburgh, however the city won’t be an exact copy as things will be added and removed to create more of an immersive feel.
Gun and melee combat feature heavily in the game; weapons can degrade over time leading you to scavenge new materials and supplies or risk being left up the proverbial creek. Ammo will also be incredibly scarce and will mainly be found by searching corpses, and very rarely in houses, shops etc. Naughty dog previously revealed that some buildings around the town can be entered, but this is entirely optional.
Finally the issue of Ellie was addressed, with most fans voicing concerns over her getting in the way and slowing you down. Players will not have control over her at any point, as she is completely AI controlled. You won’t have to constantly hold her hand and guide her through levels though. Her AI is, “one of the team’s primary areas of focus,” and it is promised that she can fend for herself and won’t ruin the experience for the player.
EGM’s TAKE: The Last of Us is shaping up to be yet another killer IP from Naughty Dog, a company that has evolved into one of Sony’s top developers. The idea of scavenging for supplies and ammo harks back to the days of the original survival horror games, where you actually felt like you couldn’t shoot something for fear of running out of ammo and being left defenseless when the next major enemy appeared. Modern day games lack that fear now. Even Resident Evil throws ammo at you and lets you go crazy on the horde of enemies blocking the objective, hopefully The Last of Us can revitalize that long lost adrenaline rush.
