New Kickstarter Kicks Off For Japanese RPG Class of Heroes II

Posted on March 28, 2012 AT 01:50pm

THE BUZZ: Up until now, a lot of the gaming-related Kickstarter projects we’ve been seeing have been for getting a game made. Today, a different kind of Kickstarter was launched: One to get a special physical release for PSP RPG Class of Heroes II.

EGM’s TAKE: So, I’ve got a few personal thoughts about all of this, but first the basic details.

Monkey Paw Games and Gaijinworks have teamed up to launch a Kickstarter project for Class of Heroes II, a first-person dungeon crawler RPG for the PSP. (You might remember the original Class of Heroes, which Atlus previously released.)

Here’s the thing: The game is already scheduled to come out in English here in North America digitally via the PlayStation Store. So what is the Kickstarter for? For giving the game a “Physical Deluxe Pack” (which the page says “will be the craziest Deluxe Pack we’ve ever done”), and to “allow us to make the games even better than they are, adding features like extra saves and better controls, smoothing out the user interface experience, and adding perks.”

If successful, the physical version sold via the Kickstarter will be the only physical release of the game—you won’t be able to buy it in any stores.

As a long-time fan of the Japanese gaming industry, I always support any effort the means English speakers getting the chance to play more great games that would otherwise be stuck in Japan. With this Kickstarter, however, I’ve got some reservations.

First up is the game itself. Class of Heroes II might not be a bad game, but it’s not a game that fans have exactly been begging or pleading for. As the game to kick off such an idea, it really isn’t the strongest choice to rally around.

Then there’s the fact that this Kickstarter isn’t for getting the game an English release—it’s for getting it a bunch of collector’s edition-type extras. Class of Heroes II will be coming out over here digitally no matter what, so support for this Kickstarter won’t be on a “I need to back the idea or else I’ll never get the game” level.

Speaking of digital releases—not one of the pledge reward tiers for the Class of Heroes II Kickstarter will net you a digital copy of the game. With the Vita now released, there’s great value in getting PSP games digitally. For Vita owners, supporting this Kickstarter would need to come in addition to buying a digital copy of the game—that seems a little crazy to me.

I don’t mean to sound completely down on this Class of Heroes II Kickstarter project—I’m just not sure how I feel about the idea, or the particular game in question.

Still, I’d like to know how you feel about all of this. Hit the link below, check out the full details, and let me know what you think in the comments below. Will you be supporting the idea? Do you think the project is misguided? Have your say!
