New Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor trailer showcases wraith’s abilities

Posted on July 31, 2014 AT 11:55am

Warner Bros. and Monolith Productions have recently revealed the secret identity of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor‘s intriguing wraith protagonist, and now they’ve released a gameplay trailer that goes into some more detail on how this enigmatic specter will help out Talion, a Ranger of the Black Gate, in his quest for vengeance against Sauron.

While the pure combat combination of this unlikely duo will be enough to survive most encounters, it’s not enough for Talion to simply use brute force in every instance. To that end, he can tap the wraith’s abilities to, in the trailer’s words, “dominate and terrorize his enemies.”

This means that Talion can “pierce the minds of his adversaries, identifying their strengths and fears.” Essentially, if Talion comes across an Orc commander that he doesn’t have the physical strength to overcome just yet, he can make this foe flee in terror instead, clearing the path to an objective that way. As we’ve seen from Frodo and Bilbo in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit books and films, sometimes using strategy and guile is the best defense in Middle-earth.

Oh, and don’t worry about spoilers here—this trailer keeps the wraith’s identity under wraps (just avoid reading the video description if you view this on the YouTube site).
