THE BUZZ: Today, another multiplayer mode has been revealed for the upcoming Max Payne 3—the King of the Hill-inspired “Payne Killer”.
EGM’s TAKE: In a preview for Max Payne 3 today on IGN, the site talks about that new mode—and what it brings to the table.
Payne Killer is centered around Max and his partner Passos. Two players will randomly start as those characters, with the rest of the players in the match filling the role of trying to take the two out. Should a player kill either Max or Passos, that player will then become one of the two hunted characters—with the other role going to the player who was the one just killed.
In order to win at Payne Killer, a player will need to earn the most points, which can be gained either by taking out the enemy players or by killing and/or injuring Max and Passos.
As well, IGN notes that—due to the unbalance that would naturally occur between 2 vs. however many other players—Max and Passos will be given more benefits and weapon options to help even the handicap.
Multiplayer modes are an interesting thing, because at this point so many ideas have been tried and so many variations presented before. Does a company stick with the tried-and-true, and just make sure to polish the hell out of those options? Or must developers constantly work to discover new combinations of elements and settings to give players something fresh? It’s a tough choice. Personally, I usually enjoy when developers try to introduce something new; of course, you then have the potential downfall that players will skip those modes and stick to the ones they’re used to, thus leaving those new modes a barren wasteland that goes under-utilized.
What do you think of the idea of this multiplayer mode? Sound interesting?
