New PS4 Controller May Borrow Ideas from PS Vita

According to PS4/Orbis design documents, the next PlayStation console may get a new controller in addition to the classic PlayStation controller, Kotaku reports.

This new controller would not replace the DualShock 3, but rather complement it. Known internally as the Orbis Development Tool, it’s described as possessing a capacitive touch pad like the rear touch pad found on the PlayStation Vita. The touch pad itself would also serves as an additional clickable button. There’s also mention of something called the “Share” button, though what it does or what it shares goes unmentioned.

To be clear, this means there would be three controllers compatible with the PS4/Orbis: one would be the same style as the DualShock 3, another would be a PS Move controller/magic wand, and the third would be a new controller—the one that would sport the touch pad.

The documents provided to Kotaku also included systems specs based on the PS4/Orbis development kit. In other words, these specs most likely do not reflect what the retail version will sport:

  • System Memory: 8GB
  • Video Memory: 2.2 GB
  • CPU: 4x Dual-Core AMD64 “Bulldozer” (so, 8x cores)
  • GPU: AMD R10xx
  • Ports: 4x USB 3.0, 2x Ethernet
  • Drive: Blu-Ray
  • HDD: 160GB
  • Audio Output: HDMI & Optical, 2.0, 5.1 & 7.1 channels
