New Screens for Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault, Details on Tower Defense Aspects

The next game in the Ratchet & Clank series—Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault—will be returning to some of the classic gameplay elements that made the series famous. However, the game will also come with some new twists on the franchise—twists Insomniac showed off a bit today via details and screenshots.
The new addition to the game revealed today? A tower assault element that’s being introduced in Full Frontal Assault. Yes, I know—I can already hear some of you raging over the inclusion of this love-it-or-hate-it gameplay idea.
The tower defense elements will “have you building and defending a base against invasions using your ultimate Ratchet & Clank arsenal,” said Insomniac Games senior community manager James Stevenson today over on the official PlayStation Blog. “This new twist, added to the classic Ratchet gameplay, brings a whole new level of strategy and decision-making to Full Frontal Assault.”
Facing off against a new nemesis in Full Frontal Assault, players will confront this enemy threat across five levels which span three different planets. You’ll be able to play solo or with a friend, either via local split-screen co-op or online.
In the comments for the blog post, Stevenson points out that the game isn’t a “full” tower defense game; it’s a game with a “tower defense twist”.
“It’s a twist to the existing gameplay. It’s still the Ratchet you know and love, but there’s a whole new layer of strategy added,” Stevenson continued to explain. “It’s all combined is the best way to put it, but this is still an action game – it’s not something where you will spend time putting up towers and waiting around – you’re able to use your hoverboots and get into the fight. It’s not a ‘tower defense game.’ It’s a ‘Ratchet game with a tower defense twist’.”
Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault will be released in North America on August 28th via the PlayStation Network.
