Square Enix’s financial results briefing for the six-month period ended September 30, 2013 reveals a handful of strategic changes the company intends to make across its operation.
According to the financial results briefing slides, Square Enix will be shifting focus to the development of online-based titles in their overseas studios, creating more titles for smart devices at home in Japan, and expand their activity in Asia.
Concerning online games, Square Enix wants to transform any existing fixed-price models into variable earning models, citing their upcoming free-to-play multiplayer game set in the Legacy of Kain universe, Nosgoth, as an example of this structure. As for the mobile scene in Japan, the report specifically mentions sequels for Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy Agito games, and the porting of Dragon Quest X for the “d-game” platform as a cloud-based game for smart devices, which is slated to launch sometime between December 2013 and February 2014.
