Next Call of Duty being developed for next-gen consoles first and foremost

Posted on February 10, 2014 AT 01:22pm

Sledgehammer Games’ upcoming Call of Duty title is being made with next-gen consoles as lead development platforms, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg told IGN during a recent interview.

According to Hirshberg, 2013 represented a transitional year for both consumers and developers when making the move from PS3 and Xbox 360 to PS4 and Xbox One, and for developers much of the new technology “was still coming into focus and changing quite a bit” during development.

“Now that we have the next-gen hardware out in the marketplace and solid, that is our primary development,” Hirshberg said.

Last week, Hirshberg revealed that the Call of Duty series would be moving to a three-year development cycle, rotating between Sledgehammer Games, Treyarch, and Infinity Ward. With this three-year cycle, Hirshberg told IGN, the studios now have “time to innovate, iterate, and bring the best creative vision and the most possible polish to each and every game.”

Hopefully that means more aggressive attempts at shaking up Call of Duty’s increasingly stilted formula.

As for the next Call of Duty, while it’s being developed first and foremost for next-gen consoles, a current-gen version will still be produced—at least this year.

“There are still a lot of people playing on current gen, and we want to deliver a great experience for them as well,” Hirshberg added. “But it will be a next-gen-first production and the current-gen game will be a version of that.”
