At a certain point, it almost feels like EA’s NHL series is going to feature goalies that are almost too perfect. With all the gameplay and A.I. updates going into the franchise’s next installment, you’re going to have to work a lot harder to get the puck into the net.
In the first official gameplay reveal of the season hockey series, producer Ben Ross provides some running commentary on the various tweaks that have been made in NHL 13, and at a glance, the defensive mechanics look vastly improved. Goalies predict passes and intercept shots a lot better than before, even mimicking the unusual splits and leans that you’ll see in live games.
Even the skating system, called True Performance Skating, has been notched up a bit, as momentum and trajectory will now affect whether or not you can maintain position went hurtling down the ice. There’s also a manual “back-skating” control now, so you won’t be unintentionally turning in circles when you’re just trying to reverse direction.
Check out the footage below to get the play-by-play. If the updated Hockey IQ lives up to its name, you’re going to be needing every new element that the game affords you just to stay comparatively competitive in the rink.
