As part of the franchise’s 20th anniversary celebration, NHL 14 will feature NHL ’94 Anniversary Mode, a retro-tastic, arcadey simplification of the gameplay, EA announced today.
NHL ’94 Anniversary Mode strips down controls to three classic buttons—shoot, pass, and turbo—tinges the ice a retro-style shade of blue, brings back star-shaped player indicators, and features a “throwback soundtrack.” Oh, and rules? NHL ’94 Anniversary Mode throws those right out the window.

Maybe others want to celebrate the 1994, but not me—that’s the year we lost Kurt Cobain, man. It was a dark time for 10-year-old Chris. As I recall, my cousin and I rented In Utero from our local library. And, uh, then played NHL ’14. Sure. That’s what happened.
NHL 14 skates its way onto PS3 and Xbox 360 September 10 in North America, September 13 elsewhere.
