THE BUZZ: Tyrone Rodriguez, formerly editor-in-chief at IGN and founder of indie studio Nicalis, claims that the Metal Gear Solid series is good “in spite” of Hideo Kojima, who he says is terrible at making games.

During an interview with IndieGames he mentioned that the recent criticisms of Japanese developers were valid and had some rather unfavorable things to say about Konami and Hideo Kojima.

“Konami doesn’t make good stuff,” he said before discussing Kojima. ”He’s terrible at making games. Metal Gear is good in spite of him. I haven’t enjoyed a game of his since maybe the original Metal Gear Solid, maybe.”

Rodriguez also had some advice for indie developers: ”The main thing I want to see from indie developers is to stop calling themselves indie developers,” he said. “You’re either a game developer or you’re not. Indie has nothing to do with it. It’s like this cool buzzword now. Do you make games? Okay, then you’re a game developer.”

EGM’s TAKE: We don’t quite see what gives him the right to call Kojima a terrible creator after the worldwide success that the Metal Gear series has enjoyed for many years. It doesn’t matter how much you may hate the franchise, you can’t dismiss the fact that the core titles are incredibly well made. We feel that someone could do with getting off his high horse and start congratulating fellow developers who do well. If people develop awful games then sure, call them out on it, but it’s obvious that the Metal Gear series does not fall into this category.
