This means that 3DS downloadable titles can be up to 50 times bigger than WiiWare game, which currently have a 40MB limit.
Super Meat Boy developer Tommy Refenes revealed the limit while complaining about the ridiculous Wii restrictions:
“[WiiWare’s] 40MB is horrible, but [3DS’s] 2GB is reasonable,” he told Nintendo Gamer magazine. “Super Meat Boy would have been on WiiWare if we could have had just a few more megabytes of space – you can only compress stuff so much before you have to start cutting out huge parts of your game. Unfortunately, at that point, it just isn’t worth the time.”
EGM’s TAKE: That’s a lot of space for developers to work with if they decide to go the downloadable route. Many may choose to switch from Wii development to 3DS as that extra space will be invaluable. On an interesting note, the current cartridge capacity of most 3DS titles is 2GB, with the exception of Metal gear Solid 3 at 4GB, meaning that theoretically Nintendo could make all titles available digitally.
