EGM’s Unboxing of the Nintendo 3DS XL

It’s not every day that a brand-spanking new 3DS XL arrives at the EGM offices, so we thought long and hard about how to share the wealth with you, our loyal readers. Initially, we planned on letting you all borrow it, one at a time, but after some quick calculations, we determined that the shipping costs involved would force all of the editors to sell their organs on the black market. Given that we’re all pretty attached our spleens, we had to settle for the next best thing: chronicling our unboxing experience through the magic of photography.

The contents of the box. All pretty standard—manuals, AR cards, AC adapter, and, of course, the system itself.

The top of the system. Not much has changed here.

The bottom, with a few major alterations. The stylus and SD card slot are now on the righthand side, while the headphone jack has been moved from the center to the left. There are now two small rubber bumpers on either side of the card slot to stop the system from sliding around if you play with it resting on a table.

And here it is opened. Apart from the obvious stuff—the bigger screens, the matte finish, and the divided Select, Home, and Start buttons—we noticed a few big changes. First, the 3D slider now snaps into place when you slide it into the off position, meaning you’ll no longer find yourself accidentally flipping it on while you’re playing. Second, the hinges on the XL lock into place at two different angles—one at around 120 degrees, for when the system’s sitting on a flat surface, and the other at the standard 170 degrees, for when you’re holding it out in front of you.

Finally, a comparison shot of the 3DS XL and the plain old 3DS. The size difference is surprising, especially in terms of screen real estate.

Well, that about covers it. Be sure to check back for our full review of the Nintendo 3DS XL closer to the system’s August 19 North American launch.
