Nintendo Announces New Mario Game, Kirby Compilation

Posted on April 21, 2012 AT 08:39am

THE BUZZ: Nintendo has unveiled a new Super Mario game and a Kirby compilation, to hold fans over until E3.

Comming out of nowhere, Nintendo announced New Super Mario Bros. 2 will land on the 3DS in August. A follow up to the mega-successful 2006 DS game, New Super Mario Bros., the game features classic Super Mario 2D gameplay with all of the enemies, power-ups and level variety fans have come to expect from the series.

What isn’t clear is how New Super Mario Bros. 2 will take advantage of the 3DS’ special capabilities, but we are intrigued about the possibility of incorporating 3D into a 2D, side-scrolling game. Will it strictly be used to accentuate layers, or will Nintendo throw in some nice, secret 3D levels, a la Super Mario 3D Land?

The other news concerned a compilation of Kirby games celebrating the little puffball’s 20th anniversary. Little information was given beyond the fact that the disc will, “contain a variety of previously released, fan-favorite Kirby games.” This is the first announcement of Kirby anniversary happenings, and Nintendo promises that, “Additional Kirby anniversary activities will be revealed at a later date.”

“A new Mario game and a big Kirby celebration will help make 2012 an especially great year for Nintendo fans,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales and Marketing. “Whether they’re playing at home on Wii or using Nintendo 3DS to have fun on the go, players can look forward to experiencing some of our biggest franchises in exciting ways.”

EGM’s TAKE: If Nintendo was going to wake us up on a Saturday with news of new games, thus making us work when we should be tending to the aftermath of our Friday night indulgences, they were at least smart enough to do it with new Mario love. Actually, we love it when announcements like this come out of the blue. We’ve been so focused on imagining a new Mario game for the upcoming Wii U we never thought about getting more Mario on the go. And as the New Super Mario Bros. games, both on the Nintendo DS and the Wii, are some of our favorite platform games in recent years, we couldn’t be more excited. Sure, they don’t have all of the fancy 3D gameplay like Super Mario 3D Land, but the gameplay holds up as well now as it did when the first Super Mario Bros. landed in 1985.

We’re also psyched about the Kirby compilation. True, this anniversary doesn’t hold the same significance as the recent Mario and Zelda celebrations, but we’re glad to see Kirby get his due. We look forward to seeing what games Nintendo will include and exactly what other activities they have planned for us.

Marc Camron is pleased to finally get a little bit of time to enjoy new games this holiday season, even if Batman: Arkham Knight isn't one of them. The rest of the time will be spent getting ready for CES in Vegas, starting on January 5th. At least it should be warmer there than in Colorado.
