Nintendo Announces New Yoshi, Mario, and Zelda Titles

Posted on January 23, 2013 AT 11:07am

Today’s Nintendo Direct brought a staggering number of announcements, including news of a new Yoshi game, a new Mario Kart, a new 3D Mario, and a new Zelda—all for Wii U.

The Yoshi game, which remains unnamed, is being developed by the team responsible for Kirby’s Epic Yarn (as evident in the picture above).

The next 3D Mario is being developed by the team behind Super Mario Galaxy.

Arguably the biggest news to come out of this morning’s Nintendo Direct presentation was word of a new Legend of Zelda. According to series producer Eiji Aonuma, the team developing Zelda’s Wii U debut were tasked to “rethink the conventions of Zelda” in order to “create a newborn Zelda so players today can enjoy the real essence of the franchise.” Aonuma specifically mentioned two conventions they’ll be altering: the need to complete dungeons in a certain, set order and having to play Zelda alone. This last part sounds like plans to incorporate some sort of co-op or multiplayer component.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata also stated that the next Mario Kart and 3D Mario will be playable at this year’s E3. E3 will also be when they unveil the first look at the next Super Smash Bros. game for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, and no doubt when we’ll learn more about all these other announcements.
