Nintendo’s is bringing Skylanders-style figurine integration to the Wii U with “amiibos” this holiday season starting with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the company revealed today during their E3 Digital Event.

According to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, each Nintendo-themed amiibo figure will containing its character’s data can be downloaded into compatible games, such as Super Smash Bros. for Wii U—which will be the first title to support amiibo compatibility. The amiibos also can have data sent back to them. So in the case of Super Smash Bros., a fighter can be downloaded into the game, develop skills, and carry those skills back to the amiibo figure to be introduced to a friend’s Wii U.

Other games will support amiibos too, of course, including Mario Kart 8. Fils-Aime wasn’t ready to share how that integration in Mario Kart 8 will shake out, but he did promise more details on ammiibo “soon.”

Both Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and amiibo figures are slated to launch this holiday season.
