Nintendo Details Deluxe Digital Promotion Rewards Program

Nintendo has launched a new site detailing the Wii U’s rewards program, known as the Deluxe Digital Promotion.
The program, available to anyone who purchases the $349.99 Deluxe model of the Wii U, allows customers to earn 10% credit back on anything they purchase directly from the eShop, as well as on download codes purchased at retailers. Rather than crediting your account directly, the rebate will come in the form of points, which you can then redeem for codes worth $5 in eShop credit, with every 500 points you accumulate earning you another code.
In the example given, a $59.99 purchase would earn you 599 points, enough to earn one $5 code.
Curiously enough, that example price point corresponds to cost of a full retail game. It’ll be interesting to see if Nintendo plans to offer many of their disc-based games on the eShop on launch date and, if so, how the system’s meager storage space—just 32 GB on the Deluxe model—will handle that strategy in the long term.
It’s also worth noting that this appears to be a limited time offer designed to drum up additional support for the console’s first few years, rather than a permanent loyalty program. According to the site, you’ll only be able to earn points through the end of 2014, and you’ll only have through March of the following year to redeem them for eShop credit.
Still, it’s a nice sweetener for early adopters, and it may well sway those who were undecided about which model to pick up at launch.
