Super Smash Bros

Despite Super Smash Bros. Ultimate‘s massive launch roster of 74 different characters to choose from, there’s one still missing that fans have been demanding for years. The nefarious but lovable Waluigi still hasn’t been added to the brawler, which has left many players to wonder if Nintendo even knows he’s so beloved. Well, it turns out the publisher is well aware.

In an interview with Okay Cool, Nintendo of Canada’s Andrew Collins addressed the Waluigi fervor, revealing that Nintendo had been aware of the many fan campaigns to get Wario’s partner in crime.

“I think it’s great when something builds naturally because, you know, as a marketer, when you have something that goes viral like that it’s brilliant,” Collins said. “You can’t buy that. You can’t create it. And when the fans do something like that, it’s amazing. But it’s so good to see from a passionate side of things. And let’s face it, it’s funny.”

Collins went on to note that he’s also “seen some of the photos” and “some of the artwork that people have created.” Given the wealth of very strange Waliugi fan art out there, we may want to send Nintendo an apology on behalf of the internet.

Of course, while Nintendo has finally acknowledged that Waluigi has been a top contender in the fan community, it doesn’t mean that he’ll be added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at some point. However, the possibility is still there, as five more DLC characters will be added down the line.

During the latest Nintendo Direct for Ultimate, the publisher revealed that five separate DLC packs would add one new fighter, stage, and extra music tracks in each set. With the high demand for Waluigi, it would be strange not to see the antihero included in the bunch. Game director Masahiro Sakurai recently revealed that the upcoming additions have already been locked down, though, so fans will just have to hope the final decisions were made after Nintendo realized Waluigi was a fan favorite.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will launch for Nintendo Switch on December 7th.
