Nintendo has been on a roll bringing each of its popular IPs to the Switch, with successful Legend of Zelda, Splatoon, Mario, Mario Kart, and Fire Emblem entries, to name a few. Now, a hint from Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé may indicate that another classic series is on its way to the Switch: Donkey Kong.
In a recent interview with Time, Fils-Aimé discussed the recent release of Super Mario Odyssey and made mention of how Nintendo revamped many of that game’s core gameplay elements for the new console. While continuing to talk about how Nintendo focuses on delivering gameplay, Fils-Aimé name-dropped both Metroid and Donkey Kong as areas of interest.
“Whether it’s with a Metroid experience or a Donkey Kong experience, we’re constantly looking to push the envelope on the IP versus doing sequential small iterations with a particular franchise,” Fils-Aimé said.
The Metroid series has recently gotten a lot of attention from Nintendo, with Metroid: Samus Returns releasing on the 3DS and the promise of Metroid Prime 4 on the Switch sometime in the future. From Fils-Aimé’s remarks, a Donkey Kong game may be on its way as well.
Metroid Prime 4 is still early in development, with no release date yet, so a Donkey Kong game may be a ways off as well. Be sure to check back for any further updates.
