Although the Wii U is already one of the year’s hottest gadgets, one major knock against it is the lack of compatibility with GameCube discs. Even Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime wishes it wasn’t so.

While Reggie isn’t saying anything concrete about whether or not that could change, he offhandedly mentioned to Kotaku that wouldn’t mind seeing those games on the Wii U:

“That is a great question,” he said, smiling. “And personally I would love for that to happen, but we have nothing to announce right now.”

A ringing endorsement from Nintendo’s head honcho in North America isn’t much to go on with so many features already announced, but it would be a bit of a surprise if the Wii U suddenly revealed itself to be a GameCube compatible console.

Besides, Nintendo of America marketing director Amber McCollom has already stated that the Wii U will only be backwards compatible with Wii discs. At best, you’ll only have the option to download GameCube titles on Virtual Console, provided you have the bandwidth and storage space to do so.

Maybe they’ll release a new Wii U system a few years from now that does backwards compatibility with GameCube discs, with a lower price to boot. While I’m wishing, it would sure be nice to get a new Star Fox game next year.
