THE BUZZ: In what may be the most shocking news to come along in some time, Nintendo has confirmed that they’ll be announced a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U at this year’s E3.
EGM’s TAKE: Who could ever have expected that Nintendo would be making such an announcement?
Wait—what do you mean “everybody”?
Okay, so maybe it isn’t all that shocking, but it’s nice to know for sure that we’ll be hearing more about such a game. According to Eurogamer, earlier today Spanish newspaper El Mundo ran an interview with Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto—who supposedly made some comments as to a new Super Mario title showing up for the console at the next E3.
Eurogamer contacted Nintendo, who then made the following statement:
“In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year’s E3 Expo. We’ll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date.”
At last year’s E3, Nintendo showed off New Super Mario Bros. Mii—a version of New Super Mario Bros. using Mii characters that was playable on the Wii U. So, this would be expected to be about a new Super Mario Bros. game—not a New Super Mario Bros. game. That’s an important distinction.
Update: Kotaku got confirmation that this game is, in fact, based in some way off of the New Super Mario Bros. Mii game that was shown at last year’s E3—and is not, in fact, a brand new Super Mario project. Here’s the statement that Kotaku got from Nintendo:
“In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year’s E3 Expo. This is based on the Mario experience that was demonstrated at last year’s E3 Expo. We’ll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date.”
