No new Need for Speed this year, returning in 2015

Posted on May 7, 2014 AT 03:03am

After over 10 years of annual releases, EA is giving the Need for Speed franchise a well deserved break this year, with plans to bring it back in 2015.

CEO Andrew Wilson broke the news in an earnings call earlier today. ”Ghost Games in Gothenburg is working on an innovative new chapter of this storied franchise,” he said. “We’ve planned an extended development window to ensure we’re delivering a high-quality experience for Need for Speed players next year.”

Need for Speed has been on an annual release schedule since 2002′s Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, with some years seeing the release of multiple titles from different developers.

I think a break is exactly what the Need for Speed series needs. Hopefully it will give the Ghost Games team a chance to really stretch their development muscles without the looming annual release pressure hanging over their heads.
