PlayStation 3 fans have been begging Sony to bring over a white version of the console since Japan first got theirs years and years ago—and that is finally happening via a new limited-edition PlayStation Plus-encorporated bundle.

In the new bundle—which Sony calls both the “Classic White” and “Crystal White” bundle, causing a bit of confusion—you’ll get a white version of the new even slimmer PlayStation 3 (featuring a 500GB hard drive), along with one free year of PlayStation Plus. It’s an interesting choice to make: instead of giving away any free retail games like is often done in bundles, they’re giving away a bunch of games for a limited time (however long you stay subscribed to PS+).

My initial reaction was that I’d rather see physical copies of games given in bundles. However, this probably is the smarter way to go, as it’ll give new PS3 owners a far better look at what their new system can do. Of course, given how many games people buying this bundle will instantly get for free, it could also cause those people to feel as if they’ve no need to run out and buy other new games anytime soon.

What I do know is that it’s frustrating that this is the first time we’ve gotten a white PS3 after all of these years—and that we’re getting one with what is, by far, the ugliest model of the PS3 family. Why couldn’t we have gotten an option for white back during the days of the PS3 Slim? Also, if you’ve ever seen the amazing array of color choices consumers in Japan get, the fact that we’re now just getting our first color variation is even more shameful.
