Nintendo sounds pretty happy with the latest NPD report, as they’ve noted that 3DS software sales are up 89 percent over last year. Granted, the 3DS library wasn’t that large last September, so that’s not a shock.

However, the company’s official PR spin is proud to note the following factoids from September’s sales:

• New Super Mario Bros. 2 sold more than 295,000 units in its second month.
• Mario Kart 7, Star Fox 64 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D all increased sales from last month.
• Super Mario 64 DS has hit 5 million copies sold in the U.S., a feat only surpassed by New Super Mario Bros. (10.6 million) and Mario Kart DS (8.5 million).

Last September, Nintendo’s 3DS was coming off of a weak debut, with only Ocarina of Time 3D, Star Fox 3DS, and Nintendogs+Cats bolstering its sales.

Lately, the 3DS has enjoyed a second lease on life due to the vastly superior 3DS XL redesign, and a much stronger library heading into the holidays. Although another price drop is unlikely, Nintendo’s handheld library should continue to move at a steady clip, especially with Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 pushing DS activity.
