NPD Numbers Paint Potentially Bright Future For Darksiders Franchise

Posted on September 7, 2012 AT 11:20am

THQ has been extremely conservative with their development budget in the last year, making significant cuts and pushing a lot of responsibility onto its core franchises. For Darksiders II, the future looks a bit brighter.

Not only did Darksiders II lead software sales in the U.S. during August, but PC sales are also vastly improved from last year according to VG Chartz‘s data tables. While the original Darksiders only sold about 10,000 PC copies during a five-week period after its 2010 launch, the sequel has performed far better with over 30,000 in its first two weeks alone.

Here’s a breakdown of how the NPD numbers for August shook out:

  1. Darksiders 2 (360, PS3, PC)
  2. New Super Mario Bros 2 (3DS)
  3. Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance (3DS)
  4. NCAA Football 13 (360, PS3)
  5. Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (Wii, 360, NDS, PS3, 3DS, PSV, PC)
  6. Sleeping Dogs (360, PS3)
  7. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron (360, PS3)
  8. Batman: Arkham City (360, PS3, PC)
  9. Call of Duty: Black Ops (360, PS3, NDS, Wii, PC)
  10. The Amazing Spider-Man (360, PS3, NDS, 3DS, Wii)

Vigil Games’ lead designer Haydn Dalton has previously stated that Darksiders II has to sell “four or five million units” in order to get a greenlight for Darksiders III. While that’s wishful at best, his team can probably bank on a sequel if their game breaks two or three million copies shipped.

Even when sales slow down for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, Vigil Games also has the upcoming Wii U port of Darksiders II to further hedge their bets with. If the Wii U’s hype is anything like its predecessor, THQ could potentially see plenty of copies moving from Black Friday until well after the holiday season.
