NPD reveals best-selling game of 2018—but there's a catch

The December 2018 NPD Report finally answered the age-old question of what was the best-selling game of the year in the U.S., but the results might not tell the full story.

Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 had been going back and forth over the last couple of months in 2018 as best-selling titles, but now that the year is over, we finally have a winner.

Red Dead Redemption 2 outsold Black Ops 4 to become the United States’ best-selling title of 2018.

However, as NPD analyst Mat Piscatella points out on Twitter (via IGN), the NPD doesn’t track PC digital sales, so it’s possible that Black Ops 4 actually sold more copies than Red Dead Redemption 2, considering Rockstar’s cowboy title infamously skipped out on a PC release. The race between the two was close enough that the PC digital sales could have made a difference.

As for the month of December 2018, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate crushed the competition, handily topping the charts. Not only did it earn 70 percent more than the Wii’s Brawl did in its launch month, but it had the best launch month of any console exclusive in history. That’s pretty darn impressive considering this year alone saw the release of top-notch exclusives like God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man, not to mention last year’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. On top of all that, Nintendo was the best-selling publisher of 2018.

Of course, globally speaking, Fortnite was 2018’s real winner, pulling in $2.4 billion in worldwide revenue, and free-to-play games in general brought in over $80 billion, with over half of that coming from the Asian market.

Here are the ten best-selling games of December and the year as a whole (via VG 24/7):
