Nvidia: Unreal Engine 3 Makes PC, Xbox 360 Ports Possible For Tablets

Nvidia’s announced that Unreal Engine 3—the full PC version that runs titles like Mass EffectBatman: Arkham City, and Gears of War—is now fully optimized for tablets. It’s a major technological leap for the company, as shown here.

Demonstrated on an ASUS Vivo Tab RT running Windows RT, the video below shows off the “Epic Citadel” tech demo that was released by Epic Games a ways back to show off mobile graphics power.

With the aid of an Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset, the demo is running at 30-35 frames per second, which the developer in the video says is a significantly important tool that other companies can use in the mobile market:

“What that means is for developers who have games on PC or Xbox [360], it’s pretty easy for them to port it over to Windows RT and have it up and running in no time and looking great.”

Given the staggering list of games supported by Unreal Engine 3, the thought of being able to play Mass Effect 3Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, and even MMOs like Tera on a tablet device is pretty appealing. Naturally, it’ll never be comparable or competitive with dedicated PC hardware, but it’s pretty futuristic.

In fact, most tablets are already able to run most games from the PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and other fifth-generation consoles. Powerful technology like the stuff shown here is a big leap, especially for modders and tech junkies.
