Oculus responds to ZeniMax claims, challenges all accusations

Posted on May 6, 2014 AT 12:00pm

In response to ZeniMax’s claims that former id Software co-founder John Carmack took Zenimax-owned tech with him to Oculus, the company released a press statement challenging the accusations.

“We are disappointed by not surprised by Zenimax’s actions and we will prove that all of its claims are false,” reads a statement issued by Oculus.

According to Oculus, “there is not a line of ZeniMax code or any of its technology in any Oculus products.” Furthermore, they insist that Carmack did not take any intellectual property from his former employer, and go so far as to claim that “ZeniMax has misstated the purposes and language of the ZeniMax non-disclosure agreement that Palmer Luckey signed.”

Oculus’ press statement also purports that ZeniMax cancelled VR support for Doom 3 BFG after the company fused ZeniMax’s demands for a non-dilutable equity stake in Oculus. Finally, they say that despite making the full source code for Oculus SDK available online, ZeniMax has yet to identify any supposedly stolen code or tech.

Carmack departed id Software and ZeniMax late last year in order to focus on advancing VR technology. He had hoped to serve as both an Oculus Rift developer and a technical advisor for id, but the split focus proved too challenging. At the time, the split was described by both parties as amicable.
