Following Sony’s own virtual reality announcement last night, Oculus today revealed their Rift headset’s Development Kit 2.
DK2 is already available for pre-order on the company’s website, priced at $350, being sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. Units are expected to ship sometime in July of this year.
The DK2 prototype introduces several improvements over the last iteration, including a higher resolution (960×1080 per eye) and a larger field of view (100 degrees). The most significant adjustment, though, is that it removes the motion blur that plagued the first headset—something that many reported caused nausea.
As someone able to try out the DK2 yesterday, I’m amazed at how far the tech seems to have come in a year. I was allowed to try the DK1 again for comparison, and the higher resolution and lack of motion blur seen from the DK2 does indeed make a huge difference as a user.
I also played a new demo from Epic, titled “Couch Knights,” in which two players each controlled a pint-sized, medieval avatar that would hop around a virtual living room. In the demo, you try to roast your opponent with fireballs or slash them with swords in a best-of-5 bout. I quickly fell in love with the ability to follow my character as it walked around me in a full 360 degrees or climbed above me on virtual bookshelves, following it with my head the entire time.
Look forward to a comparison piece sizing up the latest Oculus Rift model with Sony’s codename Project Morpheus later this week.
