The earliest incarnation of Roll7’s 2D side-scrolling skateboarding game, OlliOlli, was designed to play on iOS, creative director John Ribbins revealed to Gamasutra in a recent interview.

According to Ribbins, the decision to make OlliOlli an iOS game initially was based on Roll7’s past experience developing on the platform. But when Ribbins showed a prototype of the skateboarding game toVelocity developer Futurlab’s James Marsden, Marsden suggested he show it to Sony. So Ribbins emailed SCEE senior business development manager Shahid Ahmad and a meeting was arranged. Ahmad was instantly impressed.

“As soon as we started thinking about physical controls, what it meant for doing tricks and stuff like that, it certainly made sense,” “Ribbins told Gamasutra.

As for the Vita exclusivity, as opposed to a Vita-PS3 cross buy arrangement, Ribbins told Gamaustra that it was Sony’s call, and that in a “weird” way the Roll7 team digs the handheld exclusivity.

“I guess it was partly a suggestion on Sony’s part,” Ribbins said. “We’re not being published by Sony, but they are funding it.

“But I think from our point of view, in terms of a weird marketing angle—there’s something quite nice about being an exclusive. We’ve done iOS and PC games before, but this is the first console title we’ve worked on. So it’s quite nice to be dedicated to this platform.”
