Okay, what the hell Blizzard? When fans said that Overwatch‘s 28th hero tease looked like a hamster ball, we didn’t mean you should literally put a hamster in it!
The new hero, officially named Wrecking Ball, is live now on the PTR. The rolling mech is piloted by the hamster Hammond, a character previously teased as another test subject (along with Winston) at the Horizon Lunar Colony.
Hammond was never confirmed to be a monkey, but finding out he’s a hamster is still a bit of a surprise. Why would his room on Horizon Lunar Colony be the same size as those used for apes? Why would a rodent be on the facility in the first place? How could he use the tools necessary to build an escape pod-turned-mech? Then again, Hammond is a pretty cute name for a hamster, and whining isn’t going to change the fact that we’re living in new era of Overwatch where cuddly animals pilot deadly mechs.
Hammond has a massive spread of abilities, all filling his role as a Tank hero. His primary weapons are basic automatic Quad Cannons, while his Roll function allows him to quickly get around the battlefield. For even more maneuverability, the character’s Grappling Claw allows him to attach to surfaces and swing around the arena in ball form, knocking enemies around in the process. Tanks need means to control space and absorb damage, which is where his Piledriver and Adaptive Shield abilities come in. The Piledriver slams the mech into the ground when activated in air, launching nearby enemies upward, while the Adaptive Shield creates a temporary personal shield which generates health relative to the number of enemies around. Finally, Wrecking Ball’s ultimate ability is called Minefield, which throws a collection of mines around a massive area, forcing the enemy to tread lightly.
Wrecking Ball (aka Hammond) is now live on Overwatch‘s PTR on PC. He should arrive on other platforms in the coming weeks.
