Overwatch

We have caught a glimpse of what is presumably Overwatch‘s next hero, and while many expected a mech, this wasn’t quite what we had in mind.

Late last week, the Overwatch Twitter account posted a short clip showing nothing but an alley wall on the streets of the game’s Rialto map. The wall featured tons of posters and graffiti art, leading to wild speculation of what direction the new hero will take. The images suggested that the new hero would be either Hammond, the genius monkey who previously lived on Horizon Lunar Colony, or a battle mech from the game’s Scrapyard battle arena, set in Outback city of Junkertown. Based on the second teaser, a new theory could have both ideas being accurate.

The latest teaser video shows the same alley wall, but after a few seconds, a massive mechanical ball speeds past the screen. Given the ball’s likeness to the escape pod Hammond used to evacuate Horizon, some believe Hammond landed in the Outback and repurposed his escape pod into a mech to fight in the Scrapyard. If this sounds farfetched, it is important to recognize that there is a famous fighter in the lore of the arena named Wrecking Ball, who is believed to have fought with some orb-type mech.

This is just speculation, but more important than who the character is is what they can do. As it seems like a safe assumption that the game’s new hero will not be permanently ball-shaped, it would make sense that the rolling function we see in the clip is some type of ability. What is most likely is that the ball unfolds into the hero’s standard form, kind of like a Transformer or an armadillo, with the option to turn into the ball for quick travel. It could operate like D.Va’s flight, very flexible but on a short timer, or more like Reinhardt’s Charge, long-ranged and dangerous but rigid in its maneuverability. The other possibility is that it is the character’s ultimate ability, with high speed and high maneuverability as the character rolls around the battlefield knocking enemies about.

Fans can make their own predictions by checking out the video below.

The teases for the previous Overwatch hero, Brigitte, picked up frequency right before the character was announced, so it is fully possible we’ll know the hero’s identity sometime within the next week or so. In the meantime, a massive update is about to drop for the game, with new social features, a rework of both Symmetra and the Horizon Lunar Colony map, and a host of other hero tweaks.
