Blizzard has announced a new Workshop mode for Overwatch that will allow players to create custom rules and scripts for game modes and heroes.
“The Workshop is a simplified game scripting system that expands the customization features available in the Game Browser,” the developer explains. “Within the Workshop, you’ll create a Script to add Rules and unique play Conditions on top of the established Overwatch game modes you already know and love.”
According to Blizzard, scripts can change how a hero’s movement and abilities work, change how players are damaged or healed, display text under certain circumstances, and more.
To access Workshop, players need to head to Play > Game Browser > Create > Settings > Workshop. Once inside, they will be able to begin creating Scripts, which involve adding rules, an “Event” that will say when the rule is executed, a “Condition” that determines what must happen for the rule to be executed, and an “Action” that says what will happen when the both the Conditions and Event are met. More information about creating scripts can be found over on the official Overwatch website.
The Workshop will not allow for custom assets to be imported, so all creations must use existing assets and maps.
The new addition also features a script debugger called Workshop Inspector that will look through created scripts and locate any errors.
Blizzard has included two premade Workshop modes to give players an idea of what can be created. The first of these modes is “Molten Floor,” in which players are damaged if they touch the floor. While the second is “Mirrored Deathmatch (FFA), which places players in a deathmatch as the same hero, with the hero rotating every minute.
Workshop is available now on Overwatch’s PTR, which is only available on PC. The mode will be officially released on both PC and consoles, once testing is complete.
