Many fans believed Overwatch‘s 27th hero would be the mysterious character from the recent story update, but new evidence suggests that that role actually belongs to the daughter of none other than Defense hero Torbjorn.

Late last week, a declassified after-action report was posted to the official Overwatch Twitter, detailing a mission involving several members of Overwatch that went south, resulting in Torbjorn being wounded. One operative on the mission was a previously unmentioned character by the name of Emre Sarioglu. The enigma of this new character lead many to expect that they were the next hero to drop for the game, but two story updates since have fans leaning in another direction.

Shortly following the after-action report, a letter from Torbjorn to his wife was released, in which he reassures her about the injuries he suffered on the mission. We learn from the letter that this was the mission on which Torbjorn lost his arm, and also that he permitted Tank hero Reinhardt to name his daughter in appreciation for saving his life.

The full letter can be found below.

My dear Ingrid,

I know that by now you have gotten news of my injuries in our latest mission. While the descriptions may sound terrible, the doctors are quite sure I’ll make a full recovery. Even Angela came to visit me! On the matter of my arm, I promise to make it my first priority to construct a suitable prosthesis that will make everyone forget that it was ever gone. If only Angela’s dreams of tissue regeneration were a reality! I told her she should be working harder!

They tell me that you have not yet gone into labor, so I am holding out hope that I will be able to be by your side back home in Gothenburg when the time comes. Just wait a little longer for me!

You may have heard that Reinhardt is responsible for saving my life. I’ve heard the story at least four different times myself, already, each time more unbelievable than the last. Exaggerations, as you know how he can be. All the same, they’ve decided to award him a commendation for “conspicuous bravery.” Could two words better describe the big oaf?

He has been bothering me insufferably at my bedside. Half in jest, I suggested that if it would shut him up, I would allow him to name our daughter, as he has been badgering me about it these past months. He, of course, took me at my word. Truth be told, I had been considering making him her godfather, and I hope you’ll forgive me for making this decision without your consultation. We can only hope she doesn’t take after him too much.

I told him that you would have to agree to any name he chose, so let’s hope it’s a good one (though I fear that may be beyond his abilities, given some of the ridiculous names he gives the characters in his “true stories”). I’m getting sick of this hospital, so I am hoping to return soon.

Love,
Torbjörn

Not much alluding to a new character is necessarily hinted at by the letter, but we know Torbjorn’s daughter—later named Brigitte—to now be a full-grown and formidable looking woman, based on Reinhardt’s animated short from last year. This short also showed fans that Brigitte and Reinhardt are very close, which adds significance to the third story update that recently launched.

An image was recently posted to the Overwatch Twitter, depicting blue-prints for a club-like weapon, with the caption “I’ll knock some sense into you!” The weapon looks to be some form of melee weapon, with the word “Slaga” at the top of the paper, which means “flail” in Swedish. As Reinhardt is the only character with a melee weapon as his primary tool, and Torbjorn is Swedish, this would suggest the new hero to have connections to both of these original characters.

The Overwatch Reddit community quickly began breaking apart in the image in the comment section of a Reddit post about the tweet. Here is a list of some of the Swedish words and translations these fans have noted:

  • mikrofobrannare – micro-burner
  • titanstav – titanium rod
  • gummiblad – rubber sheets
  • forsankt skruv – reinforced screw
  • hog mutter – hog nut
  • vagnsbult – carriage bolt (a type of screw called vagnsbult)
  • titanlegering – Titanium Alloy
  • slaga medkedja – Flail With Chain

Most significant on the list is certainly the last entry, which may allude to the weapon’s form. How a flail would work in Overwatch remains to be seen, but another interesting entry on the list may suggest that it will have a special feature. The first item listed is a micro-burner, which could tease that the weapon can set enemies on fire.

This is currently speculative, but as the reveals appear to be ramping up, we should expect to learn about the identity and weapon of Overwatch‘s 27th hero fairly soon. The character will be “meta-changing”, according to game director Jeff Kaplan, so it will be interesting to see how the character mixes up the ongoing Overwatch League.
