Pachter – Call of Duty Has Replaced Grand Theft Auto as Top Mainstream Franchise

Posted on September 20, 2011 AT 06:20am

THE BUZZ: According to industry analyst Michael Pachter, Grand Theft Auto’s time as mainstream king has come to an end, thanks to Call of Duty.

Everyone used to talk about Grand Theft Auto, but years since the release of GTA IV and no announcement of a sequel means the game has left the public’s eye. Call of Duty receives a release every year, frequently a controversial one, which has seen it fly into the top spot. “Call of Duty is bigger, and GTA will not maintain its position as the world’s biggest mainstream franchise,” Pachter told IndustryGamers. “Eventually, Call of Duty may suffer from fatigue, and GTA could keep chugging along,” he added, “but it will be 8 years before we can make that call.”

EGM’s TAKE: Sure Call of Duty is a massive franchise, however as soon as we get the first official word of GTA V expect the buzz to rise back to GTA IV heights.
