Patch For Xbox 360 Version of Silent Hill HD Collection Officially Cancelled
Posted on August 8, 2012 AT 03:17pm

While PS3 owners were recently issued a patch to fix some of the problems plaguing Konami’s Silent Hill HD Collection, the publisher today announced that Xbox 360 owners will be out of luck.
Here’s the official statement from Konami—after which I’ll speak a bit as to why I think this has occurred:
“Today, Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. announced that while a PlayStation 3 online title update for Silent Hill HD Collection has been deployed for download via PlayStation Network, plans for an XBOX 360 title update have been cancelled due to technical issues and resources.
“Understanding the issues some users are experiencing, KONAMI issued a title update for Silent Hill HD Collection (PS3), which fixed frame rate issues as well as audio-synching and other reported issues. KONAMI apologizes to any players who are continuing to experience these issues on the XBOX 360 sku.”
Okay, so—why release a patch for PS3 owners, but not for Xbox 360 owners? Part of me wonders if this isn’t somehow related to Microsoft’s policies on patches for Xbox 360 games. Getting a patch out for an Xbox 360 game can not only be a huge ordeal, but also a costly one, and there has been more than one game developer recently who has voiced concern about the company’s policies for patches.
Of course, it’s also entirely possible that this is a case of Konami deciding that the collection is “good enough” as it currently is, and not worth the effort to patch. The PS3 version of the collection had more serious problems than the Xbox 360 version, and at this point, it just might not be worth Konami’s time and effort to even consider putting together a patch. It’s one of those chicken & egg situations: The collection could have sold poorly due to word going around about its quality, so people didn’t buy it. Konami might not see reason to put together a patch unless the collection sells more copies. But it won’t improve in sales unless the quality is improved. But the quality won’t improve unless… and so on and so on.
