PAX 2012: Hideo Kojima On MGS: Ground Zeroes, Fox Engine’s Potential

It’s definitely a good thing that stuff can’t get done without Hideo Kojima around. Not only is the Fox Engine looking to be a solid graphics engine, but it can probably benefit plenty of other video games, too.
Joystiq relayed a few quotable notes from Kojima during the Metal Gear 25th Anniversary panel, where the famed developer talked about other franchises where the Fox Engine could be applied:
“The thing is, once we get the Fox engine moving as we do now. You can make an FPS, you can make an Uncharted, etc. But what I wanted to do is make an open-world game, and that’s what I’m doing now,” he said.
Kojima previously stated a desire to beef up the graphical technology behind series like Silent Hill, which he says is a prime subject for using the Fox Engine.
Due to the nature of the horror franchise’s gameplay—enclosed environments, minor action, and an emphasis on visuals—Kojima thinks that the Silent Hill games can be as terrifying as the first two installment were. But for now, Kojima’s focus will be on Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, which uses the Fox Engine for Big Boss’ prequel adventure to the original Metal Gear.
Even though it’s running on a new graphics/physics engine, Kojima confirmed that the upcoming MGS title is indeed for current-generation consoles. Moreover, the Fox Engine can “upscaled” for next-gen systems, which will come in handy for the inevitable Metal Gear Solid 5.
