Persona 4 Arena Sold Like Crazy In Japan, Over 90 Percent Of First Shipment

Atlus can pat themselves on the back, as it seems they’ve broken into the hardcore fighting game community with some insanely high launch week sales for Persona 4 Arena. According to digital entertainment tracker Media Create, Persona 4 Arena sold over 138,000 copies in just four days, landing themselves right behind New Super Mario Bros. 2 in the week’s rankings.
No other fighting game has done that well in Japan since Street Fighter IV, and according to fighting game fansite Beast Note, that makes Persona 4 Arena the best “conventional” fighter in the country right now.
When you look at the Media Create numbers just a little more closely, you’ll also see that Altus can thank the PlayStation 3 crowd for the lion’s share of that success—over 128,000 copies sold for the PS3 alone (which isn’t too shocking, since practically no one in Japan owns an Xbox 360).
Moreover, Siliconera notes that the sales have apparently taken even Atlus by surprise, as the launch week blew through 90 percent of their initial stock. It’ll be really interesting if the upcoming North American launch on August 7th does remotely near that well, especially since the PS3 version is region-locked because of concerns about mass import purchasing.
It shouldn’t be too much of a negative factor, though.
In North America, roughly 36 million more people own an Xbox 360, and 15 million more own PS3 consoles.
