Pillars of Eternity won’t be making its spring 2014 release window

Posted on February 6, 2014 AT 01:40pm

Obsidian Entertainment’s Kickstarter-funded RPG Pillars of Eternity is not going to make its spring 2014 release window, project lead Josh Sawyer told Eurogamer in a recent interview.

“We foresaw needing a bit more time when the Kickstarter ended,” Sawyer said. “It’s understandable that people don’t know this but when you start a Kickstarter, once it goes live, you can’t change that [estimated release] date. You’re not allowed to change that date.

“When we started with a million-dollar budget and a relatively modest game with five classes, that was assuming if we get $1m we can make this game and we’ll probably get it done by April. We got almost four-times as much money and that’s a much bigger game, and that doesn’t mean that immediately we just dump four-times as many people on it and it also gets done in April. There’s a lot more stuff to do.”

Pillars of Eternity, originally codenamed Project Eternity, was successfully funded on October 16, 2012, surpassing its $1,100,000 goal with $3,986,929 in funding. According to Sawyer, more than 50 percent of the game content is complete “at least to an alpha state.” The game is meant to channel classic PC RPGs such as Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment—going so far as to recruit the designer and writer of Planescape, Chris Avellone.
