While known to be sometime this month, Sony today finally announced when PlanetSide 2?s long-awaited beta on PS4 would begin: Tuesday, January 20.
At the tail-end of December, SOE president John Smedley more-or-less confirmed as much, replying to a fan on Twitter that PlanetSide 2?s PS4 beta would either begin the week of the 13 or the 20, and that the studio would know for sure by the start of this week. At said start, on Monday, Smedley tweeted that they would reveal the beta start day ?in the next few days.? And, well, a few days later, here we are.
As described by executive producer Clint Worley in a post on the PlayStation Blog, the closed beta?which interested parties can sign up for on the game?s official website, and seems will run up until whenever the game launches in full?will be used to test servers, performance, and garner fan feedback through the accompanying Beta forums. At the start, a limited number of servers and only a few thousand players will be invited to participate, but Worley says they?ll ramp up both ?throughout the Closed Beta period.?
PlanetSide 2 launched on Windows PC a little over two years ago, in November 2012. The free-to-play MMOFPS received largely positive critical response, and continues to expand and grow through regular updates.
