PlayStation 3 Gets Certified in China

Though gaming consoles are technically banned in China, it’s not difficult to find them for sale. This holds true for both legitimate PS3 and Wii machines and any number of bad knock offs. However, it looks like the Chinese government might be getting ready to legitimize these sales and welcome the Sony PlayStation 3 into the country.

Website TECHINASIA is reporting that Chia is issued a “China Compulsory Certificate” for the console. This basically means that the PS3 has been certified safe for use. It does not mean that Sony has received approval to start stocking shelves.

Other factors such as price, software certification and ratings, and network accessibility are likely to be addressed before the government gives final approval. How long all this might take, or even if the company will continue to pursue it, is unknown.

The certification is good through 2016, so Sony has a few years to cement the details and open up this market.

Regardless of whether or not the PS3 ever comes to market in China legitimately, it’s good to see new doors opening. A few years ago the government wouldn’t have even reviewed the console for certification. By taking one little step at a time eventually the console market in China will open up and millions of new gamers will join our ranks. Remember, a casserole is a terrible welcome gift. Stick with Red Bull and Slim Jims.

Marc Camron somehow survived E3. The crowds were big, the games were loud and somehow he managed to get a sunburn on the top of his big, bald melon. Yet, despite all of this, he had a blast, seeing people he only sees once a year, playing all of the new games, and staying up way past his bedtime. Next year he might even have a beer.
