PlayStation 4 tops May hardware sales, State of Decay 2 tops games

Despite not having a new system to drive hardware sales, May 2018 still proved to be a fruitful month for all three of the major console-makers.

PlayStation 4 took the top spot in hardware sales for May 2018, but all three consoles all saw record-high unit sales for the month of May, attributing to a 26 percent increase over May 2017’s numbers. So far this year, hardware sales are already up 15 percent at $1.3 billion compared to the same period last year.

Somewhat surprisingly (at least to me, and I really enjoy the game), Xbox One console exclusive State of Decay 2 was the best-selling game in May, toppling God of War and beating out another console exclusive that launched last month, Detroit: Become HumanState of Decay 2‘s launch numbers almost doubled the first game’s, and Detroit: Become Human became developer Quantic Dream’s best launch ever.

Software sales overall were down slightly compared to May 2017, but that’s largely attributed to the massive success of Injustice 2‘s launch last year. May 2018 didn’t see a major release like that. Still, year-to-date software sales are still up 7 percent compared to the same period last year, already racking in a whopping $2.2 billion.

While Nintendo Switch doesn’t feature heavily on this month’s NPD report, one stat in particular blew me away. Software sales for the Switch were up 90 percent compared to May 2017. Considering May 2017 was just two months after the console launched, there are obviously more Switches out there and more games for people to buy, but that’s still a huge increase over last year.
