PlayStation Boss Says He Doesn’t Want To Block Used Games

Posted on May 14, 2012 AT 02:09pm

There’s been a lot of rumors lately about the next generation of consoles potentially blocking the ability to play used, but at least one high-ranking Sony official is against the idea.

On GT.TV’s Bonus Round, industry analyst Michael Pachter recalled a conversation he had recently with Sony Computer Entertainment of America president Jack Tretton, where he asked Tretton specifically about the topic of blocking used games:

“[Tretton] said, ‘for the record, I’m totally opposed to blocking used games. I think it’s great for the consumer that they can buy those. We haver a customer that buys our console late in the cycle, pays less, is looking for value priced games, and I think it would be anti-consumer for us to do that’.”

Pachter noted that Tretton clarified that that opinion was one that he personally had, and that exec in the Japanese division of Sony Computer Entertainment might disagree.

Here’s a big question: If the PlayStation 4 allows you to play used games, but the next Xbox blocks used games, would that affect which of the next-generation consoles you plan to purchase?
