Nintendo has confirmed that Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield will be available on Nintendo Switch from November 15th, 2019.

In addition to confirming the release date, the company released a new trailer for the pair of games that reveal a new system called Dynamax. This new system can only be used once per battle and allows a Pokémon to become gigantic for three turns, increasing their power by a large amount. While in Dynamax form, a Pokémon’s moves will be swapped to more powerful max moves.

Another big addition are raid battles, which see four players teaming up either via local or online co-op to take down and capture a wild Dynamax Pokémon. The wild Pokémon in the raid battle will remain in Dynamax form for the entire battle, but only one member of the player’s team can Dynamax their Pokémon for the usual three turn limit, so players will have to coordinate.

The trailer also introduces us to the Wild area, a vast expanse of land in the Galar region that connects several towns and cities together. Pokémon will appear on the map in this region and change based on the weather and time of day.

Moving on, we got to meet a few of the characters that players will encounter while traveling the Galar region, including Galar’s unbeaten champion Leon, his younger brother and the player’s rival Hop, the Galar region’s Pokémon Professor, and her granddaughter Sonia.

Finally, we got our first look at the legendary Pokémon of Sword and Shield called Zacian and Zamazenta.

“Zacian’s attacks are so graceful that its movements captivate opponents. Holding what appears to be a sword in its mouth, Zacian’s shining blade can cut through anything,” Nintendo explains. “With majestic movements and what appears to be a shield covering its body, Zamazenta can turn back any attack and overwhelm any opponents that dare face it.”
