Portal 2 Lego Set Up For Review, One Step Closer To Retail Approval

Posted on July 16, 2012 AT 05:54pm

That Lego Portal 2 set that popped up on Lego’s community-based Cuusoo website officially has the minimum number of supporters needed to move the project from “concept” to “something that Lego could legitimately make” in the near future. Congratulations to 10,000 of you, take a bow.

Keep in mind, ten thousand is a pretty lofty number for any Cuusoo idea, and they’ve got some insanely good ones in the mix right now. For example, take a gander at this Macross set, a Legend of Zelda that Nintendo would probably never approve, and a Lego model of Back to the Future‘s DeLorean Time Machine—all good stuff.

According to the official word from LEGO, the review process will start this September. It’s a bit of a long wait, but it’s not as easy as giving Team Brickthing a check for royalties:

The review is a thorough process and from its start, and can take several months. When finished, we make a “go/no go” decision to develop and sell a product based on the Thinking with Portals! concept.

When the review is complete, we will inform you of our decision. If green-lit, this project goes into the longest phase of the project; the Development phase. During this time, LEGO model designers refine the product and develop it for release, we create the product materials (box, instructions, marketing), and get everything ready for a production run. This also takes several months.

Of course, Lego would have to get Valve to sign off on this as well, and that’s a whole other licensing issue. Hopefully, this is a huge hit, and we’ll get a Lego Portal video game next year or sometime in 2014.
