Microsoft’s severely upgraded Xbox One, Project Scorpio, won’t start a new console generation, according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer.
Spencer said that, though, every game that runs on Project Scorpio will also work on Xbox One and the slimmer, slightly more powerful Xbox One S.
“We’re going to have versions of those games that will work on Xbox One and Xbox One S, as well as supporting Scorpio,” Spencer told Wired.
The exec also said that, even though it may seem like a lot for Microsoft to expect developers to design their games for three systems, the expectation shouldn’t be a problem for any developer that has worked on a game for simultaneous release on both console and PC.
“The capability to build a game that actually takes advantage of different hardware capabilities is part of any third-party dev ecosystem, or anybody who’s targeting Windows and console at the same time.”
The Xbox One S, which will support 4K video streaming, launches this August. Project Scorpio is set to launch sometime during holiday season 2017.
